Longview
Longview, once called Little New York is a small friendly village nestled between the majestic mountains and oil-rich ranchlands. Situated at the junction of Highways 22 and 541 on the Highwood River, it is surrounded by breathtaking scenery, close to spectacular Kananskis Country, the Historic Bar U Ranch and Chain Lakes, offering a wide variety of activities.
The Village itself boasts gourmet restaurants and coffee shops, arts, crafts, galleries, gift shops, a full-facility campground and events such as the Longview Stampede in July and the Longview Music and Arts Festival in August.
Longview has a diverse history beginning with the Stoney Indians who settled on the banks of the Highwood. They were followed by homesteaders, ranchers and farmers who had travelled west to seek new land.
The beginning of the twentieth century saw the development of coal and timber industries. The Longview Coal Trail follows the same winding route to High River as the original wagon tracks. The discovery of oil and the boomtown that grew was called Little New York. Little Chicago to the north and Little Philadelphia to the west have all but gone but Little New York lives on as Longview.
Longview is home to several artists and entertainers who are inspired by the beauty of the Foothills. It’s also been the location for many major motion pictures.
