Black Diamond

The cool little Town of Black Diamond sits at the eastern gateway to Kananaskis Country, just 52 km south of Calgary on the Cowboy Trail (Highway 22).

As a day-trip drive, you can take at least five different loops to Black Diamond from Calgary, giving you a different view each time. Farms and ranchlands come alive in spring with the return of migrating birds and the birth of calves and foals. The foothills go through rich, vibrant color changes spring through fall. And the majestic mountain backdrop is close enough to touch – stunning viewed from horseback, an adventure that can be arranged along the way.

Once in Black Diamond, you’ll instantly feel the charming rural atmosphere and the unique appeal of the historical downtown core. Support from the Alberta Main Street Project has restored the town’s original Boomtown storefronts, recalling its prosperous coal mining era. Browse downtown’s distinctive shops, galleries and trendy eateries and enjoy the warm western hospitality of the merchants.

Black Diamond is also a thriving artistic, musical and cultural community and hosts numerous well attended events, including an annual country-style parade in June, a Canada Day celebration and an old-fashioned Christmas Light Up of the downtown businesses, including hayrides, a visit from Santa, real reindeer, food and store specials.

Nearby, you can access an abundance of recreational opportunities, like camping, river tubing, fishing, hiking, golf and horseback riding. Consider planning a weekend or extended visit to allow you and your family more time to explore our cool little town and all of the activities close at hand, but be sure to book your accommodations in the Black Diamond area early as they book up fast.
